Started 2018 by reading one chapter a day in the book of Proverbs and preaching lessons on each chapter in church. I am half way through the month of January and this is what I have learned and shared as the lessons in Proverbs.
Chapter 1 – Life has two things: choices and consequences.
Key Verse: Proverbs 1:10 KJV “My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”
Chapter 2 – Life is preserved from the greatest temptations when one seeks God’s wisdom.
Key verses: Proverbs 2:10–11 KJV “2:10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
2:11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:”
Chapter 3 – Life is blessed with true value is sought.
Key Verses: Proverbs 3:14, 18 KJV “3:14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
3:18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.”
Chapter 4 – Life is blessed when you consider the path and companions in your life.
Key verses: Proverbs 4:23, 26 KJV “4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
4:26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.”
Chapter 5 – Life is preserved when the end results are weighed before the first taste of temptation is taken.
Key verses: Proverbs 5:3–5 KJV “5:3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
5:4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.
5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.”
Chapter 6 – Life is blessed when you avoid what God hates.
Key verses: Proverbs 6:16–19 KJV “6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”
Chapter 7 – Life is kept when God’s word is obeyed.
Key verses: Proverbs 7:1–3 KJV “7:1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
Chapter 8: Life is blessed when wisdom is found
Key verses: Proverbs 8:34–36 KJV “8:34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
8:35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
8:36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.”
Chapter 9 – Life is blessed when God is revered and feared
Key verses: Proverbs 9:10 KJV “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
Chapter 10 – Life is blessed when your children listen and hear wisdom
Key verses: Proverbs 10:1, 3 KJV “10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
10:3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.”
Chapter 10 – 2 – Life is blessed when love is shared
Key verses: Proverbs 10:12 KJV “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”
Chapter 11 – Life is blessed when honesty is a way of living
Key verses: Proverbs 11:1 KJV “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.”
Chapter 12 – Life is blessed when kindness is shown
Key verses: Proverbs 12:10 KJV “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”
Chapter 12 – 2 – Life is blessed when you earn your own way
Key verses: Proverbs 12:11 KJV “He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.”
Chapter 13 – Life is blessed when you learn what not to say
Key verses: Proverbs 13:3, 5, 16 KJV “13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
13:5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.
13:16 Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.”
Sometimes, we miss the purpose of Proverbs. Not to help us live a better life, but to help us live a life of influence for the Lord. God gave us the book of Proverbs so we might make a difference in the lives of others by the way we live. How we treat others is crucial to making a difference! How we talk and walk makes a difference!
I hope you are reading and learning these wonderful lessons from God’s Word.
