How often the Bible reminds us our responsibility when we speak! How often the Lord shows us we need to speak words which build and encourage!
In my Bible reading this morning, I read Proverbs chapter 18. One verse always stands out in this chapter.
Proverbs 18:21 KJV “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Our words can either give life or death to another person. We can destroy another’s life by assassinating his or her character by what we say.
As parents, we must be careful not to destroy the spirit of our children. When I coached baseball, I saw parents encouraging and destroying their children. One parent told his son, “You never do anything right.” I could see the hurt in the child’s eyes over the words his father uttered.
The old saying, “Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” is a lie. Words destroy. Words can cut to the heart of the person. Words can murder another individual.
But, words can comfort, encourage, lift up, build up, and restore another person. The right words can be as refreshing as a cool drink of water on a hot and dry day. The right words can make the difference in the life of another person.
Three things we need to do today before we speak:
1. Carefully consider what and how we say things
2. Carefully consider the consequences of our words
3. Carefully consider the other person
May our words be like “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” – Proverbs 25:11.
May God bless you today!
